Approximately 85,000 women are raped in England and Wales every year

Only around 15% of those who experience sexual violence choose to report the incident to the police.
94% of women who are raped experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
13% of women who are raped attempt suicide.
More than a quarter of Britons believe that a woman is at least partly responsible for being raped, due to her behaviour or what she is wearing...

WE STARTED THE GUILTY CLOTHES PROJECT TO SHOW SOCIETY THAT NEITHER THE CLOTHES NOR THE GIRL WEARING THEM SHOULD BE CONDEMNED FOR BEING RAPED, AND TO HELP VICTIMS OVERCOME THEIR FEARS AND FEEL ABLE TO CONTACT RAPE HELP CENTRES. THESE ARE REAL STORIES ABOUT REAL GIRLS AND HOW THEY WERE DRESSED WHEN THEY WERE RAPED. TAKE A LOOK, AND THEN ASK YOURSELF: «ARE THEY GUILTY?»

Maya
THE «MAYA» LOOK

While on a first date, she was forced into unprotected sex in her date’s apartment.

When Maya tried to open up to her best friend about what had happened to her, her friend refused to listen as she was uncomfortable hearing about things like that.

THE «MELONY» LOOK

Aged just 13, she was staying in an apartment owned by her mother’s friend, who was away. That weekend, she was attacked by two teenagers. They held a knife to her throat, tortured her, and raped her many times over the course of several hours.

She first spoke about the incident to her parents when she was 16. She contacted the police two years ago, but by this time, she was almost 30.

Kristina
THE «KRISTINA» LOOK

She went on a date with a guy, who invited her back to his apartment afterwards. There, he forcibly held her in his house until the morning, and raped her several times. Most people condemned her, claiming «You can’t call it rape because you went into his house voluntarily.»

People assumed that it was her fault and she found that even her friends stopped speaking to her after she told them. Feeling completely rejected, she tried to commit suicide. Eventually, Kristina sought professional help, but it took her several years before she accepted that it wasn’t her fault.

THE «JANE» LOOK

She was raped several times by her former partner. He asked her out to talk through some past issues and then walked her home. When they arrived, he asked for some water and when she let him in, he raped her.

After some time had passed, he told her that she had seduced him with her ‘provocative’ clothing.

Katie
THE «KATIE» LOOK

Katie was raped on holiday in Tenerife. She doesn’t remember all the details about how it happened: she remembers that she was heading home, but the rest is just a blur.

She found herself on the beach, her clothes ripped. She was ashamed to go back to the hotel and stayed at the beach until the evening. She has never told her friends or family about what happened.

THE «CLAIRE» LOOK

She was with her friends for a weekend in Rome. She left her friend at a café, but on the way back to their hotel she got lost. She saw a man walking towards her. He told her he could show her how to get to the main square but instead, he led her to a quiet alley where he raped her.

She didn’t tell her friends, because she was scared that they would blame her, saying that if she’d stayed with them, nothing would have happened.

Maggie
THE «MAGGIE» LOOK

After staying late at work in the office, a colleague offered to accompany Maggie back to her place. When she refused, he forced himself on her on a couch in the office. Afterwards, he simply got up and left, as if he was just going home from work.

She felt trapped and never told anyone at work, because she was afraid she might lose her job. She couldn’t tell her parents either, because she didn’t want to upset them.

THE «ANNA» LOOK

While out running through the park, as she did every evening, a stranger ran up behind her and hit her with a heavy object, causing her to lose consciousness. She woke up in the bushes late at night. Anna immediately realized what had happened.

For a long time after her attack, she was in shock, living in fear and barely even able to leave her house. Anna eventually found the courage to seek professional help and tried to get back to a normal life.

Anna-marie
THE «ANNA-MARIE» LOOK

She went to a friend’s party where a guy she knew raped her. At first he was very thoughtful and behaved like a gentleman. She was feeling comfortable around him, but then he raped her.

She felt like she couldn’t tell her friends. They had seen her with him all evening and she was enjoying his company, so she thought they wouldn’t believe her.

Guilty?
THE «JULIE» LOOK

At the age of 18, she was assaulted by a person she knew on her way home. To save herself, she ran onto a nearby bus.

Following the assault, she stopped talking to her friends and family and didn’t tell anyone what had happened. In the aftermath of the attack, she began drinking heavily, was afraid to go out, and became a recluse.
